The problem was an array which was not defined big enough. So it blew up during initialization. There was no error message that the array had an overrun. I guess Codesys does no bounds checking on arrays?

Whenever I try to start the application loaded onto the Pi3 , the CodeSys IDE hangs for a minute and the Pi3 app will not start.
