CoDeSys Version 3.4 SP3 offers an integrated script language for the first time.
Instead of developing a proprietary language as in the BatchMode in CoDeSys V2, CoDeSys V3 uses the wide-spread Script Language Python by imbedding the .NET based implementation IronPython into CoDeSys. You can benefit from the following benefits:

As easy as the Python principle may be, beginning to learn a new language always means some additional effort. To make your first steps a bit easier, we have listed a few links and commented code samples below. You will be able to solve many of your tasks by using code snippets from our samples. Of course you may also ask for help in this forum.
As the average CoDeSys user has already gained experience in the IEC languages, he/she probably knows how to work with variables, loops and functions and how to transfer this knowledge to Python.
Those who intend to deepen their Python knowledge and to carry out their own experiments should download the Python Standard Package which provides all necessary elements for starting with Python along with a simple development environment called IDLE.

The language Python currently is in a phase of transition. For the first time in the 20 years of history, the developers did decide to get rid of some legacy features. Thus, this is the first (and in the forseeable future the only) language update which is not completely backwards compatible.

Newly written code should not use them anyway, and thus there should be no migration problems in this regard. Some other points like the transition of string types are not affecting the IronPython implementation we use, but only other implementations of the language.
But there exist some changes which will affect freshly written scripts. The most serious ones are:
Print used do be a statement and will be a function.
Code like ```
print 'hallo'
has to be converted to
print('hallo')
. The new syntax provides some advantages compared to the old one, and can be activated in the current Python 2.6 via the statement
from future import print_function
``` - then the new syntax (and only the new one) is accepted. Thus, it is advisable to activate this by default in all new scripts.
The default division operator will return floating point values.
The division of two integral values via the "/" operator returns a downwards rounded integer, '1/2' thus returns '0'. In Python 3, a floating point number will be returned, thus '1/2' will return '0.5'. In both python versions, the operator '//' is available and behaves like the old '/' operator, returning '0'. Using the statement ```
from future import division
```, the new behaviour for the '/'-Operator can be activated.
Some functions in the standard library now return views or iterators instead of lists.
If one just iterates over the result of those functions using a loop, no change is necessary. But if one needs the list functionality (e. G. because one wants to access members via index), one has to pack the result into a list. This can be accomplished via the list constructor, instead of ```
