Are you using this example here?

check if the reader is running ok, when you connect it an use it as a HID device under Linux (open a bash/ commend line and check if it works)
Sure this example works only if there is a webvisu running (this handler is called in the visu context)
If you need a RFID reader more generic it should be possible to read the id's under /dev/...
