The other big names in the market, frankly, are still light years behind. For smaller projects, typically handled by “wire strippers” (with all due respect!), a classic environment might be just fine. But once you’re dealing with thousands or even millions of lines of code—possibly organized in an OOP paradigm, spanning large teams, integrating third-party libraries, requiring version control, and performing comprehensive tests—a lightweight, responsive editor supercharged with AI-based features becomes essential. The real strength of something like VS Code lies in its vast ecosystem of extensions and integrations: from advanced Git support to automated build/test pipelines, and even AI-assisted autocompletion that already makes software development much more agile and productive. I understand that a PLC project involves more than just ST code (task setup, fieldbus configuration, libraries, etc.). However, there’s no technical reason not to at least provide ST files in a pure text format, making version control and collaboration far easier. B&R has clearly adopted this approach; I hope Codesys will accelerate its own efforts to offer a native, text-based integration and modern development tooling. Once you go beyond a certain level of complexity—dozens of configurations, OOP hierarchies, and distributed teams—you really do need “engineer-level” software tools, not just solutions targeting “wire strippers.” For large-scale automation projects, a more open and flexible approach is the only way to avoid chronic frustration. Let me emphasize that I truly love Codesys and consider the work done so far to be brilliant—I’d be sorry to see it overshadowed by others moving faster in this direction.

Hi, I need to accesss to project information of a referenced library in the project. At least I need the "Released" flag from these information to check that no project gets shipped with unreleased libraries. Unfortunally, I do not get this information by script. Solved (see comment) Setup: Kunbus RevPi Connect+ (a raspberry based PLC) Codesys runtime package: 4.5.0.0 (raspberry, armhf) based on Codesys V3.5.18.20 Edge Gateway: 4.5.0.0 (edgearmhf,armhf) EN: The edge-gateway was added over a year ago to the automation server. I now need to make a few changes to the Codesys software, but the Pi is not showing as online in the Automation Server. Internet connection is established, I have remote access to the Pi via RealVNC. Anyone have an idea how I can solve this? Some screenshots added. Goodmorning, I would need to set a control station that can manage a PLC network. In short I need to access to all visu programmed in any PLC of the network (LAN). I was thinking to use a PLC with buttons that call, by mean an IP address, the visu of any PLC. I don't know if it is possible but I saw that there is a RemoteVisuTarget that run CODESYS Control Win V3. Can someone suggest me how to create a remote main control station from a normal PC? Hello, I am working on an application where I need to remap PDOs to a different CANopen object during runtime depending on what value is at a specific register. I have gotten to the point where I put the device into Preoperational State using the CIA405.NMT function. I then reconfigure the PDO 180x and 1a0x obejcts usings SDOs to point to a new canopen object on the device however when I go to restart the Device from PREOP to OP using the CIA405.NMT function the device is reset back to the original configuration as per the initial setup. I am wondering is there any way to change the PDOs at runtime is there some more functionaility I can access to do this. Any direction is appreciated!

In Windows I need create shared memory in PC software and connect from CODESYS. If shm is not GLOBAL doesn't work due different users between runtime and PC software. PC software need admin privileges. Name need "Global\\" before key. Very unsafe!!! If CODESYS create shared I cannot find key PC side. In Linux I can create shared memory as standard user, bind in the runtime docker, use keys without any "Global\\". Much more safe!!! If CODESYS create shared you need play with permissions to use app as standard user. I prefer create form PC software as standard user.

I am also having this issue. It was working fine for the first 2ish months and is now throwing this error. I can just try and go online again a second time and it works. I'm wondering if there is an environmental variable or something that isn't set that is causing it to use an empty path as a temp directory. The empty path will be the location the app is running from which is that path C:\Program Files\CODESYS 3.5.19.50\CODESYS\Common. The permissions don't allow a normal user to write to that directory which causes the error. It also only seems to happen when there are changes or the build has been cleaned.

Are you using the Control Win SL (installed together with the development environment of CODESYS)? If yes, you might want to consider using the CODESYS RTE instead. This has real-time capabilities (running on separate core(s)). But to be able to use this, you have to install the CODESYS Ethernet driver for your network interface to be able to let the RTE access the network port also in realtime. I have a project made on a PL700 PLC with Codesys and an Asem Premium HMI panel. I don't have access to the physical PLC right now, so I'm trying to use Codesys Control Win V3 x64. I created the application and loaded "Codesys Control Win V3 x64" without errors, then I activate "Start PLC" from the tray. Asem cannot connect. I tried to use "localhost" or the local IP address and it doesn't work (it's the "CoDeSys Soft PLC Communication Driver"). I need to connect my local Asem runtime to a virtual Codesys application on my PC. How can I do it?

I'm having trouble finding clear answers on this. I'm looking for a way to make a Codesys project password protected so that if the project is distributed it can be used to log into a controller to view and debug logic. At this same time I want to prevent the project from being saved as well as edits being downloaded to the controller. Basically I want to make a whole project view-only. What is the beat way to achieve this? I have had minor success with access rights, which solves the problem with trying to login if the project doesn't match what is in the controller. However with this solution, edits can still be made and saved, possibly corrupting the core project, preventing future logins. Any suggestions?

We establish the connection with OpenVPN Connect and can ping both controllers. We have a laptop that, most of the time, will allow Codesys connection to the controllers, but we have several other computers that are unable to connect, although all of them can ping successfully. We cannot find any difference in the configuration or software installed from one PC to another. If we connect to the router by WIFI, instead of VPN, all the computers work fine. We know that scanning the network will not work over a remote connection, so we input the controller IP directly. Has anyone had a simlar problem and can offer any hint on what to check to meke the connection run?

Hello everyone, I have a problem with the example project Responsive Design Example, which is available here in Codesys Forge. I wanted to try switching the visualization depending on the device type. To do this, I used a smartphone to access it. I can see via breakpoints that the Smartphone visualization is selected, but the visualization of the normal monitor still appears on the smartphone. Could there be a problem with the libraries, or why is the device not assigned the correct visualization page? I dont know how do further debuggin or troubleshooting. Usage of this pointer access at your own risk :-) Works with SP16. From SP17 and newer there will be warnigs etc. using this solution as I remember. It will be great, if Codesys publishes a example or give a hint how to accesse this client values with the VisuUtil lib or other future-proof way!

If you have a Windows system (RTE), then why not run the CODESYS HMI as separate controller. This could easily be moved to another PC if required. In the HMI you could also still use the Symbolic Var access as part of the Data Source Manager, although maybe OPC is the preferred way to make it more future proof. Or what about the Remote Target Visu. Then you can reduce the load of the main controller, while still only having to create one application including Visualization. This is now also supported for Linux systems. I have a time which I want to modify with a slider. I have confirmed it is possible to set the value of the slider by to_real(time) (I can see that the slider changes according to 'my_time_value's value). Slider variable: to_real(my_time_value); However I fail to access the current slider instance value when I want to write back the value as time (write to a variable will not work as I need a type-conversion before assignment). my_time_value := to_time(slider-instance-value); I tried with this^.? but could not see anything interesting and also THIS^.GEN_Instance.? but nothing resemble what could be the sliders value. Anyone that knows? Thanks!

I have created a library with both code and visualizations to be used in multiple other projects. After I update the library version into the library repository, I have much difficulty updating the version into the main project. I can always update the library version in the Library Manager just fine. My issue, is sometimes Codesys will freeze when opening the visualization that uses the library visualizations. Sometimes it opens, but freezes when I try to access the library visualizations from the Visualization Toolbox. I try letting Codesys run for upwards of 4+ hours and it is stuck in this state. On very rare cases I have no issues and can continue with my work. I haven't found a consistent reason or work around. Has anyone else had this happen?

Old thread, I know - but it still has good answers. I would like to add a bit of info to it, as I was having a problem that lead me to this thread, but didn't give an exact answer. I am porting a project to a different PLC architecture. (Wago PFC300) A GVL named 'GVL' in the POUs section of my project was shadowed by a PLC-specific library in the Application->Library Manager. So all the existing references in the device specific code to 'GVL.something' would not resolve. Right-clicking the GVL in the code and 'Go to definition' would point me to the library in the Application Library Manager. All I had to do from there, was right-click the library, and set the property 'Only allow qualified access to all identifiers' in the library.

Before creating this topic, I was browsing the search results for CodesysControl.cfg - many results, and I remember very well, it's a problematic issue for a long time. To summarize: there were many requests for documentation on this file - the most comprehensive reply is: https://forge.codesys.com/forge/talk/Runtime/thread/ebbf851a3d/#eb85 Hi, not really, this is covered by the manual which you get if you use a runtime toolkit which is not free of charge. Maybe we need to extract the config file part from that documentation if that is possible. BR Edwin I am not sure how much is this relevant, since we buy SL License directly from CODESYS... I think it is a reasonable demand, to get documentation on the configuration entries affecting the documented behaviour of the runtime system and it's components The actual reason I bring up this issue again can be read here: https://forge.codesys.com/forge/talk/Runtime/thread/febad3cc40/#0e12 but mostly my frustration about noticing some new, unknown and undocumented entries in my configuration file. Again. And this happens a lot recently. Just some examples: Changes with SysFile - and mandatory use of IEC path Introduction of Mandatory user management File transfer service now disabled by default SysProcess - allowed commands The above mentioned CmpApp parameters... And finally (Regaridng windows install): With the newer versions, the installation directory (together with the configuration file) tends to hide itself to some super silly location under the roaming profile data of local system account. I am not sure if this change was documented somewhere, but was a very unpleasant one. Someone could please explain the reason and the concept of the introduction of this release specific directories (I am sure, there is a good reason) - how to use them properly? - How to re-introduce user configuration (to preserve configuration data between versions)? - How to do version - to version migrations properly? - How to keep old version of runtime available and ready to start with it's original configuration and application? - ... Therefore, the lack a regularly updated description of CodesysControl .cfg , including all the configuration entries, together with their default values for different runtime versions is really a big deficiency.* This should be done for all components storing or just seeking data from this file... (Maybe there is such thing but I failed to find???) It is regularly causing trouble when introducing a new version (together with the long awaited bug fixes and enhancements), what has changed it's default behaviour for security or other practical reasons. I agree this is very important, and it is logical to change the default options: But it must be documented historically, and make it easily available, so we can prepare better for the upgrade of the runtime. Forge talk is a great source, but not very practical for this kind of documentation purposes... Hello! I am trying to compare 2 projects via the --compare CLI option. In the docs for the --compare option, it describes the usage as .\CODESYS.exe --compare "project path 1" "project path 2". I store my projects in WSL2 on my windows machine. Since CODESYS is happy to open those projects via a path like \\wsl.localhost\home\project.project. So, to compare, I use the command .\CODESYS.exe --compare "\\wsl.localhost\home\prog1.project" "\\wsl.localhost\home\prog2.project". This results in CODESYS just opening the project and starting, not comparing the two projects. No errors are thrown, and I know the paths are correct since I can open both independently in CODESYS, and I can compare them manually through the CODESYS UI. I have also tried moving my projects to the Windows 11 OS and still have the same issue. CODESYS opens the project and does not actually compare them. I am using CODESYS profile v3.5 sp20 patch 1. What is the correct way to compare 2 projects using the --compare CLI option?

Hi, I assume that you have a Pfc200 G2 or something and work with the original WAGO runtime. Then I would recommend the WagoSysDynamicIoMapping. Here in the example projects there is a PDF file for the library: https://downloadcenter.wago.com/learning-material/details/ll0w3pmdunzvem83g1 There is a global functional component in a GVL of the library. I think it's called DynKbusIoManager or something. The active terminals are registered there. Then there are filter Fb's for e.g. the first clamp with a specific article number. Everything is in the PDF.

Update: This initial issue was when using a Linux target PLC. Since then I have created a Win10 target PC and the Codesys software reported an issue associated with the device version (see attached). I am assuming this is an incompatibility with the xml file from the manufacturer and the firmware version on the module and I am chasing this up with Beckhoff. Question is, why would this not report with a Linux target?

Therefore, I see that the IIoT library has some functions that might help me to implement this sending process in codesys. Does anyone have any examples of how to do this?
